Spending Freeze: The Results

I know you all have been losing sleep over your concern with whether or not I successfully completed my spending freeze or not. Let me be more honest than is necessary with you. I slipped up. In my opinion, I have a GREAT excuse, but who doesn't think that way?

About two weeks ago, my sunglasses broke. This is what I get for being "fiscally responsible" and thrifting, but that's beside the point. I couldn't bear the thought of going 2 weeks without sunnies, so I splurged at Forever and bought a pair for $3.50. Yup. Three dollars and fifty cents. I literally found the cheapest pair I could. Here are the beauties that broke me.

See my face? That's a face filled with shame. I hope you all can understand my need for sunnies and appreciate how cheap I went on them. Other than this little slip up, I was successful! It went by fairly quickly to be honest.  I highly recommend doing one if you want to save a few dollars and open your eyes to how much you spend. It's frightening, but beneficial to see.

So now what? Well, I'm not jumping off of the frugal train just yet. For my next spending challenge, I am not allowing myself to buy lunch while at work for the months of September and October. I'll be brown bagging it every day. We'll call this one a lunch freeze, and it shouldn't be too difficult. It really just involves being more prepared and possibly waking up five minutes earlier to whip something up. If you have any easy and semi-healthy lunch suggestions, I would gladly welcome them! I'm going to try and mix it up more so I don't get bored as easily. Here's to hoping I can report success to you on November 1st!

You did awesome on the spending freeze! I think $3.50 isn't a big deal ;) The good thing about being literally broke is that I can't spend anything at all so I guess that's pretty good for me ha. My boyfriend packs his lunch every day for work.. it's a lot of leftovers usually with the occasional PB&J haha I can't wait to hear how the lunch lock-down goes! You'll save SO much money!!!

I just bought those sunglasses too!
If you like tuna it is a versatile for lunch - sandwiches, on crackers or the macaroni tuna salad.

You did an awesome job and I think that you did an awesome job of restraint. I really need to do this!

You're awesome, girl! I can understand wanting to fully do something, but don't sweat that at all. It's quite an accomplishment to hold back on spending, especially in our culture and being involved in the blogosphere. Mad props. I love taking my lunch, and concur with tuna being a great, easy option. Me and some of the gals here load up on salad fixens and just keep them in our company fridge (if you have that), so there's always something to throw together. Good luck and keep us posted! :)

congrats on your successful spending freeze! I am impressed you only spent $3.50 (I can't imagine not having sunnies either) over 2 months! I brown bag my lunch at least twice a week. I keep bagel thins and my favorite cream cheese in the office fridge for those days I forget to go to the grocery store or wake up too late to make something. Good luck!

Okay, okay... I won't judge you for spending the $3.50. Good girl... but the lunch thing would be hard for me. I've been cooking every single meal for myself for the last 2 weeks and I'm about to crack. I'm hoping you have better dedication than myself! Best of luck! xoxo

I've been packing my husband's lunch for years and it's so economical. If you have a small lunch bag (a thermal type) then you can also pack an ice pack inside to keep a small tossed salad with dressing cool. sliced tomato, olives, sliced beets, big dill pickles. We grill a lot so we do extra and that way he can take a grilled chicken sandwich. Also pack him some chips and a goodie bag with some Ghirardelli chocolate or Lindt, a chocolate truffle, mixed nuts, a cookie, some freeze dried fruit. Sooo many options. Can also use fresh sliced meats from the deli section of the grocery store. The ice pack makes anything possible. Will be neat to hear how you do and perhaps share a post of what some of your favorite lunches are. :-) If it's too hard to pack your lunch in the morning then pack it at night before going to bed and put it in the fridge. Can't tell you how economical it is to do lunch this way and the money you can save in the long run rather than spending $50-$10 a day eating out.

Nice work on your spending freeze! Best of luck with the brown bagging... it's easy once you get into the routine, and can also be a lot healthier!

Sandwiches are always easy! I grab the ingredients I want and throw them in my lunch bag and just put them together in the office kitchen :)

I love how you're successful with your spending freeze. I've asked teh boyf to hide my credit cards so I don't use them again until Christmas. ;)

That's great! I could totally benefit from a shopping freeze :) I've been bringing my lunch to work for a while now, it not only helps to save money but I can also eat healthier (there's a Dunkies and Subway right around the corner...eek!) Some of my favorites that are quick to throw together are a wrap with hummus, cheese and sliced cucumbers, it's not SUPER filling but man is it good! I also enjoy cold pizza....but I mean who doesn't? :)

Congratulations! You did a LOT better than I did - I think I'm going to have to set a more reasonable (some allowance but still super strict) goal for the rest of the year to curb my clothing/accessories spending so I can actually afford furniture/decor for the new place! Good luck with the brown bag goal - I am loving bringing my food with me recently..it gets me to work a little harder in the kitchen :)

Not too shabby! Your spending freeze and a few other ladies have very much inspired me to be more fiscally responsible :-)

Awesome job Morgan (I could not survive without sunglasses either!!) I pack my lunch pretty much everyday.. i usually take a salad with TONS of toppings... it fills me up more than a PB&J! I'll mix it up too by taking leftovers sometimes. Good luck!!

Shame on you for breaking your spending freeze - KIDDING!! :) Those are adorable, and as a blonde light eyed gal I totally understand that sunnies are a necessity!

I can't wait to hear how the lunch freeze goes...I always just try to limit it to one lunch outing per week - for health AND fiscal reasons :)

Aww, that's not a slip up at all - not when you only spent $3.50! After surviving a spending ban of my own, I realise now it's not that hard to do (especially when you realise how much unnecessary stuff you buy!).

That is awesome! You did a fantastic job!! I think the 'lunch freeze' is a great idea. I was doing SO well eating lunch at work but I've slipped up recently...I really need to get back on track with that. Cheaper, healthier and just all around better :)

Brown bagging it for lunch is always hard for me! What a good goal!

Great job on your spending freeze! I don't think I would have lasted the first week, though I would love to try.
