Spending Freeze Update!

So I implement a spending freeze on myself, tell you all about it, and tell you I'm going to give you weekly updates on my progress.  I've seriously failed. Not in freezing, but in updating you.

I do apologize for not staying on top of the updates, but I'm happy to report that I'm still frozen! In all honesty, it has not been that difficult. And it's really made me realize how much I do not need and how many unnecessary items I was buying.

For instance, last week before we had tons of family coming to visit, I usually would've had to have purchased at least one new item for the weekend to wear. Now really. How silly is that? I had just as great of a time without new clothes as I would've had with them. It's ridiculous when you take a step back and really think about it. My boyfriend, family, and friends love me (I'm assuming) all the same without any new clothes, shoes, and accessories, and that's what really matters.

You want to know what the one thing is that I've been dying to buy? Workout clothes. That's probably not what you expected to hear. I've started taking a couple of classes a week at Life in Synergy, and I would really like a new pair of yoga pants and a couple of new tank tops to rotate in to my workout gear. The only other thing I've kind of sort of wanted to buy is a fun scarf to wear in my hair. Random, right?

Obviously I wouldn't be breaking the bank by buying these few items, but I would be $100-$200 poorer if I purchased them. And then I'm sure you know about the ripple effect once you step into a store. There are suddenly TONS of items that you NEED to buy that you hadn't thought of before. So in all reality, it'd be more than $100-$200.

Anyhow, that's the spending freeze update. Only 1 month and 5 days to go! If you've been freezing too, how has it been going for you?

You go girl! Awesome job on your freeze. It's weird how when you sit back and think about it, you really don't need anything and you have just as great of a time... AND I've found it makes purchasing something new a lot more special!

Funny you should mention workout clothes because I'm in the same mood to buy some! I took my first yoga/pilates class this past week and LOVED it! Also, check out Gap Body- that's where I get a lot of my stuff! :) Happy Freezing!!

I'm on a spending freeze as well... currently unemployed and (besides paying my student loans) I can't spend any money. So, I'm right there with ya girl!! It's going pretty well - I want to buy so many things every day but the fact that my bank account can't handle it helps me to not do it. Normally I would. I'm glad you're doing this too. Makes me feel not alone!

I just wanted to say thank you SO much for your comment on my post yesterday. You are so sweet!

And I am totally that person that follows the ripple effect- I will go into Target and buy 10 things that I didn't even need!

Cheers to you for doing this! I used to buy a new outfit for every occassion (birthday, weekend get-together, big meeting at work, etc.), but my fiance challenged me one day to wear one of the shirts with the hanger turned backwards (this is my trick for making sure I wear something within a year...or it goes to Goodwill), and I realized I have plenty of clothes, most of which only one or two people every saw the first time I wore them. Definitely illuminating and re-centering. Good luck with the next month! :)

Good for you girl! I'm definitely probably going to start and I think that this is a great idea (and probably makes you way better at shopping your own closet!)

You go for doing this! I need to really seriously do this, I realized when I am bored or have free time I spend most of it shopping or at least online shopping and I need to take that temptation away from myself.

Keep up the good work! I do the same thing - want to buy a new top or outfit when we have plans with friends/family - and I need to stop that habit!

Stay strong! I am not on a full blown freeze, but a dramatic cutback. I agree, it is amazing how much you realize that you waste money on things that you don't need. I always give myself a mental highfive when I walk out of Target with only the item I went in for, especially when it is no fun like new windshield wiper blades...

Thank you for this post! I seriously, seriously need to cut back my spending too! I've been doing too much impulse buying lately. Once you organize what you have you realize that you can put new things together and don't always need something new. I'm really trying not to spend money on clothes, etc. for a while - hope I'm as successful as you! :)

Wow, I am impressed! Nice work! I personally think you should reward yourself with a new workout outfit after your official freeze is over! :)

Congratulations! I totally agree that it was easier than I thought, originally - of course there are things I seen and am immediately upset that I can't buy, but a few hours later I forget about them, half the time. It completely put my previous spending habits in a totally new light - CLEARLY, none of the things I was buying are really necessary. Once this freeze is over I might need to impose a 48-hour rule to at least force myself to take a long step back from my insta-obsessions and see if I end up forgetting about or getting over them!

That said - I'll admit that I caved, once. SO bad, I know; I blame my boss for letting me out early when I needed to kill time before my dinner plans. I've been dreaming about the Deborah Lippmann - Happy Birthday polish for about 6 months now and I was itching to do a glitter tip mani with it. So I caved at Nordstrom - I guess it's time to officially blog about my $18 failure (once I get pictures of my mani and try to justify it)! At the very least, I have learned that my nail polish addiction is completely undeniable and desperately needs to be dealt with.

Congrats on being stronger than me - and good luck with the next month ahead!

Good job, girl! Doesn't it feel good to not be controlled by material things? I'm selling a lot of my designer stuff and all my girlfriends think I'm crazy. Personally, I'd rather take a bomb.com vacay than have all that money just sitting in my closet!

I am soooooo proud of you, Morgan. I only lasted 3 days. It's just the one thing I can't give up! BUT, I will say that I have gotten MUCH better about how much I buy! Keep it up sister!!!

I just started my second spending freeze this week. I did it earlier this year during the spring and thought it was great and much easier than I expected. I've been dying for some new workout gear too, but it's just going to have to wait.

Congrats to you for sticking with the freeze! Good luck for the next month! I'm sure it will be a success :]
