I'm Freezing

I get it. You're confused. The vast majority of the country is experiencing an extreme heat wave, and me? I'm freezing. Allow me to explain further.

Temperature-wise I'm not freezing. Spending-wise, I am. That's right. I'm implementing a spending freeze on myself for the months of July and August. This freeze will apply to clothes, shoes, jewelry, bags, and accessories. This freeze will not apply to food and beauty products. Mostly because my desire to not eat is non-existent and well, I still need make-up, showers, and shampoo. I hope you can understand.

{via}
"Why would I do this?", you ask. The biggest reason is, as I've discussed before, I feel that along with blogging comes the pressure to wear the hottest trends, and it therefore forces you to spend money. Lots of money. So, this is me proving to myself that I can withstand the pressure. The next reason is pretty simple: I want to save more money.  Someday, hopefully not in the far far far distant future, I would like to stop renting a home and start buying one. And do you know how much down payments are on those bad boys? A whole lot. A whole lot more than is sitting in my bank account right now.

So, I promise to stay totally honest with you guys. Even if I just buy a 5 dollar bracelet, I'm going to tell you. And you can all chastise me. Hopefully I'll be able to stick with it, though. I'll do my best to give you an update every week. And hopefully it's positive, and then you guys can praise me instead of chastising me. Sound good?

Also, if anyone feels like doing this with me, I'd gladly welcome some moral support and a spending freeze buddy. Sooooooooo, do I have any takers?!

Good for you. If you stay out of the stores it will be a lot easier. It's summer...there's plenty to keep you busy.

Good luck! I had to do that and my best advice is to make sure everyone knows you are doing it so that people have to hold you accountable and you are sort of shamed when you buy something and you know everyone knows you aren't supposed to!

I actually already am doing it with you! After spending a completely exorbitant amount of money on my boyfriend's surprise birthday weekend, both of us agreed that it was time to stop spending on non-essentials - which for me, means basically clothes and accessories. I had set up a budget on Mint.com (have you ever used it? It's amazing.) last month for those purchases (and all of my other spending) and I realized very quickly that I was GROSSLY overspending even more than I thought.

You're so right about the blogging world - it makes it so hard to resist new, shiny things that bombard your eyes on a daily basis, but at least for me - most of them are really out of my reach, and I need to start living that way. It has honestly been extremely difficult already - so I'm thinking some moral support from someone who understands the urge (unlike my shop-once-a-year boyfriend) would be a huge help!

Good luck! I've thought about doing something similar but there is always some excuse I can find. i.e. the Nordstrom Anniversary sale this month. But I'd love to try it soon. Can't wait to watch your progress, hopefully it will give me the push I need to complete a spending freeze as well. :)

Yeah, I'm with you. At least for the next three weeks, until I go on vacation. Ha, I'm screwed! So next three weeks, and then August and September. Mine includes makeup - esp nailpolish! I'll twitter you the spending!

I need to do this too! I started budgeting a few months ago which REALLY helped. I started to see where all my money was going.... which was down the drain to all my favorite stores. I've fallen off the bandwagon the last month with temptation to buy new dresses and sandals for summer... but I'm definitely going to try along with you to limit it! We're also trying to save for a house and wow you're right, it's a lot of money. good luck!!!

Good luck! I'm not freezing my spending, but I am giving myself a strict $100 budget this month. It's amazing how good it feels to research and prioritize instead of just buying the first thing that catches my eye.

Good for you! Blogging does make it really hard as far as wanting all of the latest products, you're an inspiration! Good luck!

Good for you!! I'm trying to do the same right now and I've been doing pretty well. Although, I did buy a bathing suit over the weekend but it was Target and was on sale so that was my justification! We're saving for a house right now too so I totally get it. Expensive is right! Good luck :)

Dang girl...you've got more willpower than me. I think if my husband actually looked at our credit card bill he'd put me on a freeze too. Good thing we have our bills set to autopay!

Good luck!

I was reading this, and I am too!!! Mostly because I have NO shopping in the town I am in for the summer, and I would revert to online shopping but I have decided against it. NO NEW CLOTHES until October It is forcing me to use the clothes I have and build that saving account!!! Good luck lady, we have support for each other!!!

Good for you! I'm doing the same thing right now. Our bank accounts will thank us.

I couldn't agree more! All these fabulous blogs can put pressure on a girl. I totally support you Morgan- you can do it! I think that this freeze will help us in the long run. I'm looking into buying a home and seeing all of us on the same mission is helpful! xo

I just finished doing the same thing, though I did it for 6 months (I know...). It was hard sometimes but it did make me realise how much stuff I would buy because it was cheap or because I was bored. Good thing is that you get more creative with your clothes and you have more $$$ in the bank. Good luck :)

You should just go through what you already have and repurpose or dye a few items to new colors, or shop at a Goodwill store. You would be amazed at the neat clothing there. AND, you don't have to admit you bought it at Goodwill if you don't want to. Good luck with saving for a house. It takes a great deal of self control to not spend that money on all the frivolous items we all seem to think we MUST HAVE. Been there done that.

Fabulous idea and I admire you!! If I can restrict myself to only funding our home makeover I'll be happy. We're having a huge yard sale soon to help inflate the budget! I look forward to your "progress"

This is brilliant and freeing! A lot of times, I give into the pressure to shop when I know it's not the best for my budget at the time. This is an inspirational and encouraging post! Thanks for sharing!

That's awesome - good for you! I've tried to make it a point to wear every item in my closet instead of buying new pieces. Definitely doesn't always work..so good idea taking it 2 months at a time!

Maybe I should do this too... my husband and I recently got into a spat over a $5.99 fefora...

Okay before you think he sounds crazy, the spat was because I lied about buying the hat, not the fact that I spent $5.99.

I realized that I'm probably hurting my relationship more than I'm helping my wardrobe, and it was literally a few minutes ago that I was considering making some kind of a drastic change.

Let's do it!
